Christian McCaffrey is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday for an ankle injury he sustained in the Panthers’ 31-17 loss to the Bucs on Sunday.

McCaffrey’s final play of the game came early in the fourth quarter, when he scored on a 7-yard toss sweep to cut Tampa’s lead to 21-14. But he came up limping after Bucs linebacker Devin White tripped him up into the end zone; he attempted to get it re-taped but did not return to the field. He finished the game with 59 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, adding 19 receiving yards off four catches.

First-year Panthers coach Matt Rhule did not specify the severity of McCaffrey’s injury after the game, though initial reports from NFL insider Ian Rapoport suggest Carolina is hopeful it’s not too serious:

McCaffrey through two games has 156 rushing yards off 41 carries (3.8 yards per carry), four rushing touchdowns and seven receptions for 57 receiving yards. His injury on Sunday was one of many suffered by NFL stars, including Giants running back Saquon Barkley, 49ers defenders Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas and more.
